BACKYARD BLOOMS ON 35MM

001. This year I have been prioritising shooting 35mm again! While I wait for a big bunch to get developed this week, I decided dive into some older memories that haven’t been released online. I took a couple years ‘off’ shooting film in order to try spend less money in that department, while also coinciding with a couple of my cameras retiring. But I am on team 35mm… I missed it too much! The way it captures light, the excitement and patience in the developing process. Life is way too short not to chase the little bits of magic you can find.

003. This post is some shots off a roll from Spring 2025 - a collection of backyard blooms. Taken in the generous backyard of a little 1970s shack I was renting with a bunch of gal pals on the Sunshine Coast. It was one of those gardens that had clearly been loved for a long time. A huge Poinciana, a Jacaranda, an old Frangipani… Spring was an extra magic time when it was all blossoming and alive! We also had one of the biggest Hoop Pines in town, flowering Hibiscus and Banksias at the front, the Black Cockatoos loved to come and chomp on. The African Rain Lilies that turned the lawn pink after rain, while not native… did add an extra bit of whimsy, as you walked in the front gate I wasn’t mad about.

003. It was a pretty magic backyard in the burbs. Looking back through these images… I feel lucky I got to call it home for a little while. Even luckier to have enjoyed all the care and love that so many green thumbs had poured into it before me…
